The Gamer’s Notebook
Welcome to Of Dice and Dragons and the July RPG Blog Carnival! This month we’ll be talking about all those wonderful things that surrounds The Gamer’s Notebook.
It’s been just over seven years since the RPG Carnival touched on this topic and it was actually hosted here as well. You can check out that piece of history from 2014 by reading, the GM’s Notebook.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a Game Master or a Player, everyone seems to have one. They also come in all shapes, sizes, and types, each with their own pros and cons and let’s face it, everyone likes to share ideas and see what someone else is doing.
So for your entry this month, take a few minutes and share your gaming notebook – photos are of course welcome! Some things folks may find interesting:
- Paper or digital – why did you make that decision
- Are there particular applications or websites you use, not only for your notebook but for creating things to put in it.
- Speaking of thing you put in your notebook, what do you put in it?
- For those that prefer paper, what type of notebook do you use and why?
- Do you use a notebook at all? Maybe it’s a binder, or one of those multi-pocket expandable folders
- How about everything on a note card?
The list of things is really endless and I’m sure there are more than a few folks that’ll be interested in what you have and you might also pick up a few ideas to “borrow” as well.
So here’s what you need to do. Write up your post and then add a comment to this posting so others can find it as well. I do have a requirement that you have to have a comment approved before you can comment freely so please be patient if you don’t see your comment come up right away.
So, what’s in your notebook?
May your dice roll well!
Hi Scot, I just added my thoughts from the perspective of a player and a blogger tasked with writing the groups session reports, but I think there is a lot of value in notetaking particularly for newbie players. Here’s my entry – https://www.dragonskeep.co.uk/post/the-gamers-notebook-a-bloggers-perspective
Hey Tony, thanks for sharing!
Hello Heroes!
I shared a hack I use for keeping tabs on my NPCs, without using actual browser tabs.

Thanks for hosting Scot!
Hey Rodney, thanks for sharing!
Hi Scot, mine is here: https://plasticpolyhedra.blogspot.com/2021/07/my-gaming-notebook-or-how-i-am-learning.html and was intended to be published 2-3 weeks ago but I thought I might benefit from reviewing my process before I did so. Thanks for the inspiration to do so!
Nothing wrong with letting a post sit for a bit of time to “marinate.” Thanks for sharing.
