RPG Blog Carnival – Encounters!
The September 2022 Carnival is over, be sure to stop by the Wrap-up Post!
As the calendar shift to September the RPG Carnival returns to of Dice and Dragons for a topic that is important regardless of the system you play – Encounters!
In case you missed it, check out last month’s RPG Blog Carnival – Character Development which was hosted by Adventures to Authenticity.
Many of us are very familiar with the combat encounter and for a lot of groups it forms the central aspect of the game but if you think about it anytime the players interact with a component of the game world it is an encounter.
- Is there an encounter to fondly remember?
- Maybe one that didn’t go so well for the player or the game master?
- How do you go about building an encounter?
- Share an encounter you’ve created
Those are just a few questions to get you started with this month.
Need more inspiration?
Check out the page Encounter Ideas on this blog which includes several ideas for encounters – no stats, just the idea and framework for the encounter.
You can also check out How to Build Encounters on a Budget over at RolePlaying Tips. It’s a recent issue of Johnn Four’s newsletter and provides some great information about building encounters.
So what will you share this month? Be sure to include a link in the comments below so all can check out your contribution.
Be sure to checkout all the previous RPG Blog Carnivals and maybe consider hosting in the future.
May your dice roll well!
Thank for contributing Mike
My pleasure, Scot! The article isn’t directly encounter related, but it does touch on the subject, and deals more generally with how encounters (and other game elements) relate to the adventure.

Cheating a bit here with a blog entry from last month, but it was a fun illustration of a bunch of players with no RPG experience grabbing hold of the fiction and playing with the world. As well as an opportune 2d6 reaction roll on my part…
